From 1 to 4 months of age, your baby will continue to grow at the same pace he or she achieved in the first few weeks. Here’s what you can expect.
During this time, your baby will generally gain about 1 to 2 pounds (0.7 to 0.9 kg) and grow 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) each month. His or her head circumference will increase by about 1.25 cm each month. However, these are only averages, so keep an eye on your child’s development by comparing it to the average growth chart. At 2 months of age, the soft spots on your baby’s head (fontanelles) should still be open and flat. However, by 3 months of age, the fontanelles on the back should close. Additionally, your baby’s head may be large compared to his body because he is growing fast. This is normal; his body will catch up soon. At 2 months of age, your baby will have a round, chubby appearance. But as you start to use your hands and feet more actively, your muscles develop. Your bones are also growing rapidly, and as your arms and legs loosen up, your body and limbs will appear to elongate, making you appear taller and slimmer.
